Former A-list publicist Rob Shuter is getting ready to burn down the gossip industry — and he's doing it with a fictional veneer. The man who once reps Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Jon Bon Jovi and Alicia Keys is releasing his debut novel "It Started with a Whisper" on April 21, and let's just say the timing of these 'fictional' accounts is... interesting.
The book follows four gossip reporters hosting a morning show on a struggling cable network — a concept that mirrors Shuter's real-life stint co-hosting VH1's "The Gossip Table" from 2013 to 2015. But here's where it gets good: Shuter kept a diary during his VH1 days, and he's been scrolling through those memories with a very specific purpose. "I was looking back over my diary, reminiscing about all the funny, crazy, cruel, happy, upsetting things that happened, and I figured out very quickly that this is a book," he exclusively told Page Six. Translation: fiction on paper, but definitely not made up.
Shuter's specialty? Orchestrating the press around celebrity breakups — specifically two of the biggest splits of the mid-2000s. He helped navigate Jennifer Lopez's first breakup with Ben Affleck in 2004, and Jessica Simpson's divorce from Nick Lachey in 2005. "You know it's going to explode, that it's going to make worldwide news, and so actually crafting this breakup statement can be quite tricky," he explained. "Asking for privacy is actually quite odd because you're putting out a statement. I love the dichotomy of that; it did make me giggle." Bold words from a man who literally made a living controlling the narrative around people's most painful moments.
The former publicist-turned-podcaster (he runs "Naughty But Nice" and has a Substack) is playing it coy about which real stories made it into the book, but he's dropping hints. "I think people reading the book closely will recognize some of the people," he teased. So while J.Lo and Jess Simpson move on with their lives, they're probably not going to be reading this one for bedtime inspo.
