The-Dream is framing this as a triumphant return driven by pure artistic instinct and fan demand. He's emphasizing the authenticity—recording techniques from 2006, same vocal chain, same cadence—as proof he hasn't lost his edge. The message: he's still that guy.
Insiders say The-Dream has been quietly collecting ideas for this project since around 2018, but sources close to the process reveal he wasn't fully committed until recently. Word is Playboi Carti's studio proximity and gentle push about those signature ad-libs was a genuine turning point in finalizing the album's direction.
The original 'Love/Hate' dropped December 2007, with every track recorded in just 11 days (except 'I Luv Your Girl,' which came three months later at L.A. Reid's request). The-Dream has five credits on Beyoncé's 'Coworker Carter' (2024) and worked recently with Rosalía and Summer Walker.
The-Dream spending over a decade in the shadows writing hits for Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Rosalía while fans begged for his own music is exactly the kind of artist-come-full-circle story R&B needs right now. Dream season is officially back.
NINETEEN YEARS AFTER PLANTING HIS FLAG as one of R&B's most promising futurists, The-Dream is finally coming back home. Terius Nash—the man behind some of the biggest hits of this century including Rihanna's "Umbrella," Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body"—is returning with "Love/Hate 2" via RadioKilla Records in partnership with Republic Records. The album, led by the freshly released single "Bring That Body," marks his first major solo project in over a decade.
"I had to search for why I was having this inkling of the idea to do a record at a certain time, especially to call it 'Love/Hate 2,' which is one of those things where it's like, alright, you better have the goods or else," The-Dream told Variety in his first interview about the upcoming era. "It came out of nowhere, man, just hit me." The project has been gestating since around 2018, with certain songs dating back to that year and others created more recently within the last three to four months.
But The-Dream insists he didn't rush it—he was intentional about maintaining the sonic fingerprints of his original work while still pushing forward. "I wanted my vocal chain to be the same," he explained. "That would be from mic to preamp, of course, nerd things.
I was shaving off these new plugins. I was like, go back to '06 and give me the same plugins that I was using back then." The lineup for "Love/Hate 2" reads like a who's who of modern music royalty: T.I., Rick Ross, Usher, Pharrell Williams, Mike Dean, Swizz Beatz and Playboi Carti all appear on the project. But here's where it gets interesting—Playboi Carti apparently asked The-Dream directly about those signature ad-libs fans remember from his early work.
"He's like, 'Wait, big bro, where's the ellas?' He was like, 'What? Are you crazy?' As soon as he said that I said, alright, cool. Thank you, young fella." So yes, The-Dream is bringing back those signature vocal touches—and apparently needed a nudge from Atlanta's most recognizable mumble rapper to do it.
Beyond the album itself, The-Dream has spent the past decade quietly building out different facets of his creative identity. He's kept busy as a songwriter, with recent credits on Rosalía and Summer Walker's albums, plus five tracks on Beyoncé's 2024 opus "Coworker Carter." But he's also been pursuing fashion—completing an internship at Rhude in Paris and studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Still, after all these years building other people's visions, he couldn't resist the pull back to his own work.
"I just want a tour, man," The-Dream said when asked what's next. "And I just want to see those people. I've been super busy for so long.
Even when I went, it was like a blur. And the fact that I get to even be here now speaking about this and going out to celebrate the first album, the second album, third with people in the world, I just want to feel that thing with them." He's already planning additional projects after "Love/Hate 2"—including an album called "Nikki" that's apparently been ready for a while but needs updating with his "2026 mind." Dream season has officially returned, and if the first single is any indication, this comeback is going to hit different.
