UTA is positioning itself as the agency of choice for emerging auteurs, scooping up Meeks before his August theatrical release proves whether he can translate Sundance buzz into box office results.
Insiders say agencies are in a bidding war for indie filmmakers who land Sundance acclaim β UTA just got there first with Meeks, whose hybrid documentary-fiction approach has Hollywood talking.
'Union County' debuted at Sundance Film Festival in January 2026 and earned an extended standing ovation. Oscilloscope Laboratories acquired the film for theatrical release on Aug. 14. The feature expanded from Meeks' 2020 short, which premiered at Berlin International Film Festival.
UTA is making a calculated gamble on untested talent β but with Will Poulter attached as producer and a Sundance standing ovation under his belt, Adam Meeks might just be worth the risk.
United Talent Agency has signed "Union County" filmmaker Adam Meeks for representation, sources confirm to Celebrity Bytes. The signing comes hot on the heels of Meeks' critically acclaimed debut feature premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where the opioid crisis drama earned rave reviews and an extended standing ovation from festival audiences. The film stars Will Poulter and Noah Centineo as brothers grappling with opioid addiction in rural Ohio β but what sets "Union County" apart is its groundbreaking hybrid approach.
Meeks seamlessly blends his actors' performances with real-life participants from a court-sponsored drug rehabilitation program, creating a documentary-fiction crossover that industry insiders are calling unlike anything they've seen on the opioid crisis. At an extended Q&A following the Sundance premiere, Poulter β who also served as producer β explained what made Meeks' script different: "It didn't really start with a story and then a search for a place," he said.
"But rather the story that was being told was a reflection of the real work that was being done." Meeks developed this unique narrative after spending time with his extended family in rural Ohio, where his uncle connected him with a drug court judge who invited him to observe rehabilitation program sessions. The Brooklyn-based filmmaker recognized early on that filming actual recovery participants would be ethically complicated β and potentially traumatic for those involved.
"It was also important to fictionalize the core narrative, both as a way to get to a certain kind of intimacy of storytelling and a character portrait, but also to allow us as filmmakers to observe the difficult moments...without imposing that on somebody who's going through recovery," Meeks explained. The theatrical release is already locked in: Oscilloscope Laboratories acquired "Union County" earlier this month with an Aug. 14 premiere date set.
Beyond UTA, Meeks is also represented by Untitled Entertainment and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz. The filmmaker is a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and a Film Independent Screenwriting Lab Fellow β credentials that clearly caught UTA's attention as they position themselves to represent one of indie cinema's most talked-about emerging voices. The question now: can Meeks translate Sundance buzz into sustained success?
"Union County" marks his debut feature, expanded from a 2020 short film by the same name that premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and screened at the Champs-ΓlysΓ©es Film Festival and Palm Springs International ShortFest. With A-list talent attached, major distribution secured, and now heavyweight representation in his corner, Adam Meeks is positioned to be a name everyone in Hollywood will be watching this summer.
