The Spin

Prime Video is positioning this as a prestige adaptation with serious talent attached. Karyn Kusama directing the first two episodes? That's the woman behind Girlfight and Evelyn. Charlie Covell running point as showrunner adds credibility, and stacking the cast with these names signals they want awards attention.

The Tea

Sources say production is moving fast—this was first reported in September 2025, and they're already locking ensemble pieces. The videogame fanbase is notoriously intense (looking at you, Pricefield shippers), so whoever thought casting Tatum Grace Hopkins as Max and Maisy Stella as Chloe better deliver because this community does NOT play.

The Receipts

First reported to be set up at Prime Video: September 2025. Cast includes Owen Teague (It, It Chapter Two) alongside Maisy Stella and Tatum Grace Hopkins as previously announced leads. Tom Cullen will appear in House of the Dragon Season 3 on HBO.

The Last Byte

This is a smart play by Amazon—gaming adaptations have been hit or miss, but throwing this level of talent both in front of and behind the camera? That's how you avoid becoming the next Sonic disaster. Watch this one closely.

Amazon Prime Video's adaptation of the beloved Life Is Strange videogame franchise just got a LOT more interesting. Variety has learned exclusively that Tom Cullen, Leisha Hailey, Raúl Castillo, and Owen Teague have all been cast in the series, joining previously announced leads Maisy Stella and Tatum Grace Hopkins. The show centers on Max (Hopkins), a photography student who discovers she can rewind time while saving her childhood best friend Chloe (Stella).

As they investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student, they'll uncover dark secrets in their town—and face an impossible life-or-death choice that promises to haunt them forever. It's heady stuff, and the casting choices suggest Prime Video is taking this seriously. Cullen will play Mark Jefferson, Max's teacher—a character from the games who carries some genuinely unsettling weight.

He'll next be seen in Season 3 of HBO's House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series. His other credits include Downton Abbey, Black Mirror, and Mudtown. Hailey takes on Joyce Price, Chloe's mother—a role that hits different given her history with complex female relationships on screen.

She's best known as a fixture of The L Word universe (original and Generation Q), but has also logged time on Silicon Valley, Bosch, and CSI. Oh, and she's an accomplished musician who co-founded both The Murmurs and Uh Huh Her. So there's that.

Castillo slides into the role of David Madsen, Chloe's stepfather—another character with a complicated history in the source material. He's coming off the critically-acclaimed HBO series Looking (and its followup film), and will appear in Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City at AMC. His recent credits include Task at HBO and American Horror Stories at Hulu.

Teague rounds out the ensemble as Frank Bowers, a local drug dealer who becomes entangled with Chloe and her circle. He's got serious genre cred—appearing in both It and It: Chapter Two, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, plus Black Mirror and Task alongside Castillo. Behind the camera, Charlie Covell serves as creator, executive producer, and showrunner.

Mackenzie Dohr handles writing and executive producing, while Karyn Kusama directs the first two episodes under her Familystyle production banner—she's the director behind Girlfight and multiple acclaimed indie projects. The series comes from Square Enix, Story Kitchen, LuckyChap, and Amazon MGM Studios. The videogame franchise has been a cult hit since its 2015 debut, known for its branching narratives and emotional gut-punches.

Fans of the games will recognize these character names immediately—and they'll be watching closely to see how this adaptation handles the source material's more controversial plot points. With casting like this, Prime Video is signaling they want this to be appointment television. We'll find out if the execution matches the ambition when production wraps and a premiere date gets announced.
