Paapa Essiedu continues his meteoric rise by lending his talents to an independent British short film—a humble, artistic choice that shows he's not resting on his Harry Potter laurels.
Sources say this project marks a calculated pivot for Peake into the producing space—she's building a slate behind the camera while her acting profile remains sky high. This could be the start of something bigger.
Essiedu recently won an Olivier Award and is currently filming Professor Snape in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series. The film has locked its world premiere: Sunday 21st June at Raindance Film Festival, with a second screening Tuesday 23rd June.
Two heavy hitters attaching themselves to a debut indie project? That's not charity—that's calculated positioning for both parties as awards season heats up.
Paapa Essiedu isn't just busy—he's absolutely everywhere. Fresh off his Olivier Award win, the man now playing Professor Snape in HBO’s forthcoming "Harry Potter" series has found time to squeeze in another project: the British short film "Laundreams," which he stars in alongside Maxine Peake ("I Swear," "Say Nothing"). That's right—Snape himself is doing indie shorts between wizarding world shoots.
The man's work ethic is frankly exhausting, and we mean that as a compliment. The project marks the feature debut of writer-director duo Amber Gadd and Evie Ward-Drummond, who clearly have connections. Ward-Drummond ("G'WED") also stars in the film alongside David Fielder ("Peterloo") and Gadd herself—making her screen acting debut, no pressure there.
Peake isn't just acting though; she serves as executive producer alongside Tobi Kyeremateng (who won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Short Form for 2023's "How to Be a Person"), Chris Overton, Rachel Shenton, and Mustapha Wehbi. That's a stacked producing team for a short film—someone clearly believes strongly in this project. "Laundreams" is set in rural Sheffield at an actual working laundrette—the filmmakers filmed on location at Ward-Drummond's family business, which adds an intimate, authentic touch to the production.
The story follows Minnie and Leah, two twenty-somethings who've never left their hometown, whose lives get upended when former coworker Danny (Essiedu) unexpectedly returns from London. Chaos ensues as they try to impress him—a classic setup that could hit hard in the right hands. The filmmakers describe it as "an ode to the bravery of dreaming, no matter where you come from" and a film exploring "the humour, tenderness and ambition that exist within ordinary spaces." Cinematographer Nanu Segal ("Hoard," "Slow Horses") is behind the camera, lending credibility to what could otherwise be dismissed as just another Sundance bait short.
The production is handled by Nina Georgieff and Anna Sophia Duff for Muckea, in association with Little Lark Productions and Oscar-winning Slick Films. And here's your calendar reminder: "Laundreams" has locked its world premiere at the BAFTA and Oscar-qualifying Raindance Film Festival, screening Sunday 21st June at 12:15pm and Tuesday 23rd June at 12:45pm. Qualifying for Oscar consideration?
That's not nothing. That means this little Sheffield short could potentially compete for a nomination—and Essiedu just happens to be attached to another HBO project that might be eligible too. Timing, as they say, is everything.
