The Italian premiere of House of the Dragon Season 3 will open the Taormina Film Festival on June 10, Variety has learned exclusively, giving HBO's dragon-soaked epic one seriously dramatic backdrop: an ancient Greek amphitheater with Sicily's active Mt. Etna brooding in the distance. Four cast members are confirmed to attend the Sicilian launch: Steve Toussaint (returning as Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka The Sea Snake), Harry Collett (Jacaerys Velaryon), Bethany Antonia (Baela Targaryen), and Phoebe Campbell (Rhaena Targaryen).
These aren't exactly your A-listers like Matt Smith or Emma D'Arcy, but the four younger-generation actors will get to experience something their more senior co-stars missed—being part of a festival premiere in an actual ancient amphitheater. The global bow for Season 3 happens in London on June 8, just two days before this Italian showcase. The Taormina Film Festival itself is undergoing somewhat of a transformation under the guidance of Tiziana Rocca, described as a "marketing guru and festivals specialist" who is apparently giving the storied event a revamp.
The resort town became famous to American audiences as the location for The White Lotus Season 2, so HBO clearly knows exactly what kind of gorgeous Mediterranean visuals they'll be getting. "We are proud to open the 72nd edition of the Taormina Film Festival with one of the most beloved and spectacular series on the contemporary international scene," Rocca said in a statement. "Welcoming the cast of 'House of the Dragon' to Taormina and offering the Italian public this exclusive preview is an extraordinary event that confirms the festival's role as an international benchmark for the entire audiovisual sector." For American viewers counting down, Season 3 will premiere on June 21 at 9 p.m.
ET, streaming simultaneously on HBO Max, with new episodes dropping weekly until the August 9 season finale—that's eight total episodes stretching across nearly two months of Dragon Civil War content. Italian audiences get it one day later on June 22 via HBO Max. The show is based on George R.R.
Martin's Fire & Blood and tells the story of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of Dragons, set roughly 200 years before Game of Thrones. As for other festival business: Jane Campion will preside over this year's Taormina jury while Helen Mirren picks up a lifetime achievement award. And in what might be the most random casting choice of the summer, Russell Crowe is expected to attend for the world premiere of Australian action thriller Bear Country, reuniting him with Unhinged director Derrick Borte.
